Summer Term in Firefly Class
We’re sailing across the Atlantic and over the Appalachian mountains this topic as we discover the Wild West! During this topic, we will be finding out about the Native Americans and the first settlers as well making totem poles. We will be using this topic as a stimulus for our writing as well. We’ve already had a nice to start to the topic, hearing an Apache legend around a campfire. Any excuse for the teachers to dress up! In numeracy, we will be developing our learning of calculations, fractions, decimals and percentages and shape and measure. We will be using some of these skills in science as we explore living things and their habitats.
Thanks for encouraging your child’s reading. On the whole, we are delighted with some excellent progress in reading this year – hopefully your child has shared their new reading ages. If not, I’m happy to share if you let me know. Lots of children have made well over ayears progress since September which is fantastic news. Equally, thanks for your on-going support with helping your child understand their weekly spellings which are a mixture of word patterns, tricky words and age-appropriate words from the national curriculum. We’re having an inter-class competition on Accelerated Reader this term. The class with the best percentage of questions correct on their quizzes can win a class prize- perhaps a non-uniform day or film afternoon! So, there’s plenty of reason to continue daily reading throughout this term.
Year 5’s will have the opportunity to stand for Family Captain and will need to prepare a speech to say in front of the school. Many have also requested to take part in a ‘Bikeability’course. Please use the checklist that has been sent out to ensure that your child’s bike issuitable for this activity and that they have a helmet. Year 6’s have their trip to Eaton Vale after SATs and we shall all be taking part in a musical production at the end of term. PE days for Firefly Class continue to be Monday and Friday. Hopefully all sessions will be outside, weather permitting. This term, we will be concentrating on Athletics and Rounders. There are still too many children not bringing in a complete PE kit, particularly trainers. Please ensure your child has a full, correct and labelled PE kit. Bearing in mind that summer is on its way, it may be appropriate to give your child the opportunity to apply deodorant before coming to school and please also make sure your child brings a refillable water bottle in every day. Please note that children may wear a coloured T-shirt which relates to their family group for PE and sports day. Homework will still be sent out weekly and needs to be returned to school before Tuesday lunchtime – this is when homework club is for those that haven’t brought completed homework into school.
The Year 5s will be learning about puberty and Year 6s about reproduction this term. Miss Esom will be running a session for parents, so that you know what we will be discussing and what materials we will be using. More details to follow.
Finally, if you have any worries or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to speak
Best regards, Mr Tingey and Mrs Evans
