Gecko Class - Year 3&4

GECKO CLASS

Welcome to Gecko Class Page!

We are a mixed Year 3 and 4 class taught by Miss Gaught and supported by Mrs Skeats and Mrs Constable

Home/ School communication diaries: Children have been issued with a home/school communication diary. These diaries act as a communication tool between home and school. If you have any questions or messages for me or any of the other adults working in class, then please feel free to write them in the designated section within the book. Equally, staff may use the book to write a message for your attention.

As part of the homework, children should read at home for at least 15 minutes every day. Please sign the diary to show your child has read. Spellings will also be added to the diary and these should be practised each day as part of their home learning.

English: Our English works includes the use of a scheme called The Power of Reading. This excellent resource looks deeply into an engaging book and encourages thorough understanding of the text as well as exploring a love of reading and writing using tasks related to the story. Books this year include: Pugs of the Frozen North, Pebble in my Pocket, Arthur and The Golden Rope and a non-fiction text yet to be chosen.

Maths: The children across Years 3 and 4 are grouped according to ability. We all follow a set scheme of work called White Rose which ensures a thorough progression of skills and a spiralling curriculum. This means that all the skills for arithmetic and problem solving are practised regularly. Please continue to encourage your children to access Times Table Rock stars at home as this has improved their tables skills enormously.

History and Geography: Our topics this year have been The Stone Age, Beautiful British Isles and The Romans.  The children have been developing their map work skills, learning more about our country and learning about the features of rivers. Discovering what life was like in the Stone Age and currently, what the Romans have done for us has kept them very busy building on previous knowledge.

Science: Topics this year have included Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We have learned about Sound, Human Digestion and Rocks and Soil. We incorporate experiments, investigations and demonstrations as well as videos and images to inspire the children and encourage scientific enquiry.

Computing: This follows a rigid system of learning to give our children the best chance in our increasingly technological world! Our Year 3’s and 4’s can now programme using block coding and operate a branching database as well as create a stop motion film. They are increasingly familiar with online blended learning techniques such as Google Classroom and Google Docs.

Homework: This is given out early in the week and the children have a week to complete it. The work will be related to something we are doing in lessons; usually it has a grammar or Maths focus.

Snack and water – we encourage eating a healthy snack at break time; a piece of fruit is perfect but not bananas please. A drinking bottle with water may be brought to school and the children can refill it from the water cooler outside our classroom.

PE Days are Mondays and Wednesday and the children can come to school wearing PE Kit for the whole day.
