Mathematics
At Lakenheath Community Primary School, we believe that every child can achieve and enjoy mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to develop confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians who are fluent in number, able to reason mathematically and can apply their learning to solve problems in a range of real-life contexts.
We follow a mastery approach to mathematics, ensuring that children develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts before moving on. Through the use of practical resources, visual representations and abstract methods, children build confidence and make meaningful connections across different areas of mathematics.
In Reception, children develop strong number sense through the NCETM Mastering Number Programme alongside a carefully planned curriculum for shape, space and measure informed by the Cambridge Maths Hub. In Key Stage 1, we follow the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation Materials, supported by Oak Academy resources, and continue to participate in Mastering Number sessions. In Key Stage 2, teaching is planned using the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning, ensuring clear progression and full coverage of the National Curriculum, with a view to continue to introduce the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation materials across KS2.
A key feature of our mathematics curriculum is the development of oracy. Children are encouraged to discuss, explain and justify their mathematical thinking using precise mathematical vocabulary. Through structured discussions, reasoning activities and collaborative learning opportunities, pupils develop confidence in communicating their ideas and deepening their understanding.
To support fluency and engagement, children also have access to NumBots and Times Tables Rock Stars, helping them develop confidence and automaticity with key number facts.
Through high-quality teaching, rich mathematical discussion and opportunities to apply learning across the curriculum, we aim to equip all pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to be successful mathematicians now and in the future.
The DFE Ready to Progress document identifies the most important areas in mathematics that pupils need as they progress from year 1 to year 6. These important concepts are referred to as ready-to-progress criteria (RTP). The ready-to- progress criteria (RTP) have been selected in order to develop pupils’ mastery of the primary maths curriculum and, if all criteria are taught and met, pupils will be able to more easily access many other areas of mathematics.
The files below show the RTP criteria for years 1-6. By clicking on the selected year group, you will find a link for further information about each RTP criteria.
